How Does Celluma Light Therapy Work?

Celluma Infrared Light Therapy (also known as LED/Light Emitting Diode therapy or Phototherapy) is the application of light energy to safely treat a wide variety of conditions that range from acne to hair loss, muscle pain, and wound healing.

How Does the Light Therapy Work?

In the early 1990s, LED therapy was being used by NASA scientists to grow plants in space. In their process to recreate photosynthesis for plants, they realized a similar process could be applied to human cells and tissues!

Photons (aka light energy) are absorbed by photo acceptors in the mitochondria, the part of the cell where all its energy is created. This leads to the creation of more adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the molecule that provides energy for living cells to perform metabolic processes like repair and regeneration of cell and tissue components.

Essentially, our bodies photosynthesize like plants, taking in light energy to create new cells and repair tissues. Today LED/ Red Light Therapy is used by medical practitioners, dermatologists, estheticians, and physical therapists for medicinal and cosmetic purposes.
